Sepia Saturday #107: ASTONISHING! “I Am My Family”

animals

Kat's Zoo (1968) Some of my stuffed toys assembled to help celebrate my birthday, loads of animal gifts, and of course, my "Teddy" in my arms, as always.

Now to the real story:

You must all have a look at this!  My husband and I saw a television program about this artist some time ago and I’ve been meaning to post about him.

Chilean-born, now Toronto-based, Rafael Goldchain, has transformed himself into members of his own family.  By using costume and artistry and photography, he has created his own ancestral photos!

I just had to share this!

I would LOVE to be able to do this. Imagine the possibilities!

Anybody good with Photoshop, or Corel Draw?  I need a tutor!

(photos coming soon!)

  1. That is an interesting idea. Before you start playing with Photoshop, I think you would need to make a self-portrait (or find an existing one) with a position and lighting similar to the old photo that you want to combine it with.

  2. Wow Kat that was interesting and I bet you can pull it off. I have no idea how to do that. My son does it for me remotely since he is an IT man. I am in Ky. and he is in Austin, Tx. Good luck

  3. Now there’s a project I don’t think I would tackle. I’ll be watching to see how you get on.

  4. I still have my teddy from my christening (he’s nearly 47 and a bit bald). Rafael’s idea is very interesting – if I can brush up on my photoshop I might fit into my great grandmother’s dresses :-) Jo

    • My Teddy is 50! My dad’s sister sent him to Canada when I was just six months old. He has a new oversuit that I crocheted for him a number of years ago, but his original eyes are still there!

I want to see that photo of you in your grandmother’s dress!

  5. You’ve just reminded me of an old photo of me with all my toys lined up – why did we do that I wonder? The ‘I am my ancestors’ idea is undoubtedly clever and artistic, but just a wee bit spooky I feel.

    • It IS a bit spooky, isn’t it? Fantastic all the same.
I’d love to see your photo with the toys – it’s a sense of proprietorship, I think. I was an only child at the time, and prized all my possessions. I’ve always been orderly too.

  6. Karen S. Says:

Oh such an adorable little girl you were…..and such a reader too! Thanks for this link, I am going to check it out right now!

  7. Karen – Always been a reader! My favourite place was the bookmobile that came to the school behind my house every Wednesday.

  8. That is quite fascinating. I will have to spend some time at his site.

Love the shot of you with your haul.

  9. I haven’t spent enough time on the site, myself! I mean to read more about this intriguing artist.

  10. You were very cute in the photo, Kat. As for people placing themselves into old photographs – it’s an interesting idea but I am concerned that with programs like photoshop images can be so altered as to not be “true” anymore. I guess I want the truth in a photo, at least the truth of time and the person/people in the photograph, if not the truth of clothing and background. But, his book is amazing. Thanks for sharing.

  11. It is a fine image and a wonderful link to a photographer I have never come across before. It’s a great idea.

  12. Terrific idea, but like antiques, one should always label them to avoid deception. :-)
